Minister O’Toole marks anniversary of Korean War Armistice
Ottawa – The Honourable Erin O’Toole, Minister of Veterans Affairs, issued the following statement to mark Korean War Veterans Day and the 62nd anniversary of the signature of the Korean War Armistice:
“Only a few years after the heavy toll of the Second World War, brave Canadians once again heeded the call to protect peace and democracy. Thousands of men and women left their homes in Canada and went to the aid of South Korea, exemplifying our nation’s unwavering commitment to the cause of freedom.
“Of the more than 26,000 Canadians who served in the Korean War, 516 lost their lives. We solemnly remember their sacrifice.
“The strong kinship that Canada and South Korea enjoy is built on the foundation of our shared sacrifices during the Korean War. Today, through remembrance, trade and people-to-people ties, our two nations are working together to ensure security and prosperity.
“The freedom and peace we enjoy today remain fragile as global threats to security and prosperity exist and must be confronted with the same vigilance our Korean War Veterans demonstrated more than 60 years ago.
“In 2013, the Government of Canada officially declared July 27 to be Korean War Veterans Day. Canadians have taken this day to reflect on the contributions of our men and women in uniform, and to express our utmost gratitude.”
